How To Post A Video On Instagram – Why The Hype?
More and more brands are finding that visual content is a great way to maintain customer engagement and to translate that into direct and consistent sales.
While there are many platforms that allow brands to visually connect with their customers, Instagram is the best contender in the field.
They constantly introduce new features like Instagram Stories and IGTV. These features help to:
#1. Enhance user engagement with your business’ products and branding.
#2. Increase your chances of converting your digital marketing efforts into real monetary returns from your products.
#3. Establish partnerships with e-commerce platforms like Shopify to enable businesses to close the sale.
Why Is Instagram Winning?
Instagram’s success is attributed to the fact that video is king right now, especially among the younger demographic — which is Instagram’s biggest demographic, even in comparison to Facebook.
That’s why your business should make an effort to post at least one video a day on Instagram.
Younger consumers prefer to actively engage with brands.
What’s more, studies have shown that they are much more willing to pay for experiences over possessions. What better way to take customers through an experience than with a video?
They want to see, hear, and engage with brands in a more direct way. Photos just aren’t cutting it anymore.
They want clear and interactive communication and want businesses to hold their attention in short bursts.
That’s why you need to get on board by creating Instagram videos. And not just any Instagram videos: I’m talking about great Instagram videos.
But before we get into what software I’d recommend you to use to make these stellar videos, let’s look at the types of video posts that you can make on Instagram.
Types Of Instagram Video Posts
The sky is the limit when it comes to what you can do and show in an Instagram video.
Be that as it may, as a business owner, you should never, I repeat, never create a video and post it on Instagram on a whim.
Your videos should always have a purpose and serve to add value either to your business or to potential and existing customers.
Meaningful Instagram video posts can be broken down into three main categories:
#1. Product Promotion
The great thing about videos is that they can compact a whole wad of information in a very tiny time-frame.
As a business owner seeking to promote your products online, videos are the Holy Grail.
And no, it’s not only because Wyzol released stats reporting that 79% of online shoppers who bought products were convinced to invest in a product by watching a video from the business.
Nor is it just because in those same stats, 68% of shoppers were more inclined to learn about a product through a short video. Always remember that your Instagram video’s length should always be tailored to your audience. No one likes long videos, so put someone through the torture of watching a lengthy video on your product?
More than that, just think about the amount of your product’s info that you can pack into a minute-long video versus what you can show in an image. Tons more, right?
#2. Strengthen Your Brand Trust
When you’re in business, your brand is one of the cornerstones of your success.
How people perceive your business’ brand can either make or break you. That’s why it’s important to build a brand and company that customers, both current and future, can trust.
There’s no better way to do this than with a video.
Take, for instance, this video shared by internationally acclaimed Chef Massimo Bottura.
In the video, the chef is seen pulling out a pasta dish that he made from leftover tortellino, something that we learn in the caption for the video.
Already known for his consciousness about food and wastage, videos like these help to cement his brand as a chef and make it more credible.
It’s because we can actually see with our own eyes proof that he does practice what he preaches, thus providing value to us while helping his brand to come across as more genuine and believable.
3. Boost Marketing Qualified Leads (MQLs)
Video marketing gets you more leads. Fact.
Just ask Optinmonster. In 2019, they released stats indicating that video marketing saw a 66% increase of qualified leads yearly.
It’s true. Video does go a long way in bringing you real ROI results on your marketing efforts.
Where To Post Videos On Instagram
As of 2019, Instagram allows you to post videos in four different ways. Each of these ways is different in the video length that it allows along with other factors.
#1. Instagram Stories
Instagram Stories made its debut in 2016. It was launched as a way for people to engage and share their lives in a seemingly more candid way. Using Stories, users can post photos, collages or videos that disappear after 24 hours.
Turns out Instagram was spot on with this feature: people prefer to watch videos with direct and clear messaging. They don’t want to spend time navigating different pages to piece stories together themselves.
Understandably so. Nobody wants to “Sherlock Holmes” their way through Instagram. People want cohesive and engaging stories that they can like, share and interact with, easily.
Now, brands are posting videos via Instagram Stories as a medium to creatively show their customers how their products are made and sourced.
Often times, they show the behind the scenes — the blood, sweat, and tears — so users can see the humanity in every process. A deeper level connection that they arguably couldn’t replicate on any other platform.
Again, numbers don’t lie. Instagram Stories has 400 million daily active users. Let’s give that some meaning.
That means that 400 million users — the majority of which are your ideal customers or clients — watch Instagram Stories every single day. That’s an opportunity you don’t want to miss out on.
#2. Instagram Feed
The type of video feature which Instagram first supported was the Instagram Feed video.
This type of video was posted on your Instagram ‘feed’, in other words, your Instagram profile.
Your Instagram feed is the section of your Instagram page where other users can get access to whatever activity you want the public to see.
Unlike Instagram Stories, a video posted on your Instagram Feed doesn’t have a fixed lifespan of 24 hours. It remains there until you decide when you want the video to be removed or replaced with another one.
Sharing a video on your Instagram Feed is a great marketing strategy that can bring you substantial returns.
According to Renderforest, if you have a video on a landing page, you can boost your conversion rate by as much as 80%. In the Instagram world, your profile is just like the landing page on a website.
You shouldn’t skip out on such a great chance to get amazing returns on your marketing investments.
#3. IGTV Videos
Don’t know what IGTV is? I’ll break it down for you, it’s pretty simple: IGTV is Instagram’s version of TV.
In a nutshell, IGTV allows you to post videos that are as long as 10 minutes on your channel.
If you have a certain number of followers, Instagram does allow you to share videos that are as long as 60 minutes to your IGTV.
IGTV is a great feature because it allows users to upload longer videos that their other platforms like Instagram Feed and Instagram Stories would allow.
If you feel that having a longer video will be instrumental to your video marketing success, Instagram’s got you covered.
#4. Instagram Live Video
Instagram Live Video is one of Instagram’s newer features that enables you to post real-time video content to users on the platform.
Instagram Live Videos can go on for as long as 60 minutes, giving you ample time to make the most of it as a tool to get your products and brand out there.
How To Post A Video On Instagram – Step 1: Creating Your Video
Now it’s time to create your video!
Obviously, you’ll want to create a video that not only gets the job done but one which is visually appealing. There’s no way you will attach your brand to a low-quality, poor resolution video that is poorly edited.
Making great videos are an investment. That said, just because they’re an investment doesn’t mean that you’ve got to have deep pockets to get them done.

Step 2: How To Share A Post On Instagram Using Your Lumen5 Videos
Instagram doesn’t currently allow you to post your videos directly from your computer to Instagram. When you create videos on Lumen5, you need to save them to your computer, transfer them to your phone and then post them to Instagram.
Let’s go through the process step-by-step.
Download the video file from Lumen5 onto your computer.
The next step is to upload your Lumen5 video to Dropbox (Android/iOS) or Apple iCloud (iOS only) so that you can access it from your phone.
When you’ve selected the video that you’re going to be sharing to Instagram, click ‘Upload’ to get the ball rolling.
The video will then download and show up in your Dropbox as having been successfully uploaded to the platform.
The same goes for iCloud. Look for the icon which allows you to upload files to the server.
Select the video you just created and upload it to iCloud.
Once uploaded, you should see your video appear, installed and ready to be used!
Step 3: Transfer File To Your Phone
Download the video file from the Dropbox/iCloud Drive mobile app onto your phone.
For both platforms, you will see an icon which allows you to download the file directly from either server.
For example, in the photo above, this is the icon you’ll see on your Apple device’s iCloud Drive Mobile App.
In the one below, the arrow points to the icon you’ll see on the page of your Dropbox mobile app.
Both of them say ‘Save Video’.
Tip: You can upload videos straight from the iCloud Drive “File” app directly to Instagram.
Once your video has been successfully downloaded, there’s nothing stopping you from posting your Lumen5 video!
Step 3 – Posting The Video To Instagram
Post the video to Instagram from your mobile device. You can post it either to your Instagram Feed as is done in the sample below.
Or, you could upload it to your Instagram Stories provided that it meets the platform’s video length requirements.
And there you have it! Uploading a video to Instagram is that easy.
Tips For Great Instagram Video Marketing Success
Although Lumen 5 is a fantastic tool for making great videos for Instagram, social media marketing is more than just well-done videos.
A lot more goes into a successful social media campaign. If you want your efforts to turn into a success story, here are a couple of tips that you can implement when developing your marketing strategy:
Create A Video Marketing Calendar
In case you don’t know, video marketing calendars are instrumental in planning and executing successful marketing campaigns.
They function just like traditional content calendars in the sense that they are a tool used to lay out exactly how a business’ content will be distributed over a specific timeline.
What sets video marketing calendars apart from the traditional ones is that its content layout is represented in the form of a video.
The benefits of creating a video marketing calendar are endless:
- It allows you to preview your content and clearly structure out how you want your material distributed in a visual way.
- Single-out key content milestones in advance around which you should center most of your content marketing efforts.
- Facilitates consistency in your marketing campaign as you’ve created a plan that you should stick to.
- Lays out the course of your marketing campaign for you and your team so that everything is well communicated to all parties involved.
Become An All-Round Digital Marketer
You can have the best digital marketing tools and software that money can buy: if you don’t hone your marketing skills and master the art of digital marketing, your chances of being a successful digital marketing manager are slim.
And when I say skills, I don’t just mean hard skills like mastering SEO and graphic design that you’re taught in school: I’m talking about soft skills.
More and more, professionals are seeing the importance of having soft skills.
In as recent as 2016, stats were released by Wonderlic showing that 93% of employers believed that soft skills were a very important factor when hiring someone for a job.
What often causes a lot of projects to fail are the little things, like poor organization and inadequate communication.
And this isn’t just me talking: studies conducted on the subject back it up, with employees stating that 75% of long-term job success hinges on an employee’s soft skills.
Be sure to make yourself a holistic digital marketing guru by ironing out kinks in areas that impact how well you work. These include:
- Crisis Management
- Time Management
- How well you listen to others
And the list goes on. Don’t leave any stone unturned on your journey to becoming a rockstar digital marketer.
