One of the most common mistakes I see when turning blog posts into videos is simply creating a video that’s far too long.

Tools like Lumen5 makes it really easy to turn blog post into videos, but it’s still really important to take careful considerations to make sure that you do it effectively. When you’re writing a blog post, the context you’re keeping in mind is that your readers might spend 10, 15 or even 20 minutes reading a longform written piece of content, but in the context of your everyday social videos, really they should be no longer than 1 to 2 minutes long.

And the common mistake I see is when people cram the entirety of a written piece of content into a single video, that becomes 10, 15, 20 minutes long. And again, your everyday social video should be no longer than 1 to 2 minutes long, and my recommendation is to turn your longform piece of content into a mini video series.

When you’re writing longform content, you’re naturally breaking up topics and chapters and paragraphs with different headers. Instead of cramming the entirety of your written piece into a single video, break it up into a video series of 5, 6 or even 7 different videos, and the result is that each of those videos are going to be much more engaging, since they’re within in 1 to 2 minute range and you get yourself a whole video series that allows you to publish more consistently, day after day. So a single blog post could actually last you an entire week. Where you post part 1 of 7, 2 of 7, 3 of 7, it keeps your audience coming back for more and it makes each of those videos much more engaging and effective.

So the next time you go to turn a blog post into a video, keep that in mind and test the results for yourself.
