Virality is actually quite simple. In a nutshell, if people share your video, it goes viral, and if people don’t share your video, it doesn’t go viral. So every step of the way, you should be constantly asking yourself, “will people share this video?” To come up with a good answer to this question, we must first understand the reasons why people share.

Sharing is a human behavior, and therefore understanding human psychology can help us decode the secret of virality.

There are two ways to look at motivation: logic and emotions. Outgrow suggests that we share content for one of ten reasons:

  • To connect with someone over a shared interest
  • To promote a product they believe is useful for others
  • To be involved in a current trend or event
  • To be the first to tell a friend about an event or product
  • To share something about themselves
  • To socialize with friends offline
  • To promote a good cause
  • To demonstrate their own knowledge of or authority on a subject
  • To start an online conversation
  • To gain opinions of friends

 

They also suggest that “certain emotions lead to consumers not only viewing content but also sharing it,” and these emotions include:

  • Amusement
  • Delight
  • Interest
  • Affection
  • Surprise
  • Happiness
  • Joy
  • Hope
  • Excitement
  • Pleasure
